I am... You are... Art is...

I am... You are... Art is...

Below is the text spoken to an auditorium of undergraduates in a survey course on contemporary art:

Under your seats you will find a sheet of paper.  Please get it out from under your seat.

Hi, my name is Bog.

I’m going to ask you to write something on the sheet of paper in your hands. You will have two full minutes to write.

[Gesturing to my left.]
This side of the room: In writing, complete the sentence that begins with the words “I AM”

[Gesturing to my right.]
This side of the room: In writing, complete the sentence that begins with the words “YOU ARE”

[Gesturing straight ahead.]
This central part of the room: In writing, complete the sentence that begins with the words “ART IS”
I will also complete this sentence.

Start now.

[Two minutes elapse]

Ok. Pencils down.

[Lifting my sheet of paper...]
Now, take a few moments to thoroughly crumple up that sheet of paper.
Like so...
[...fully compacting that sheet of paper above my head.]

Pass them up to the aisles.  Two volunteers will come through to collect them.
[Two volunteers, each with a trash can, walk up and down the aisles collecting the paper]
