Two Elders from the Church of Latter Day Saints in Isla Vista, CA accepted an invitation to occupy my studio for the four-hour duration of an MFA Open Studios event. Prior to their arrival, a white floor-to-ceiling curtain was installed, bisecting the studio into two 8’x16’ spaces. The front space was transformed into a white gallery, empty except for a table and two chairs that the Elders had requested. Behind the curtain were my consolidated studio and the studio windows. Peering into the open studio from the hallway, the viewer could see only the white curtain. Upon entering the studio, the viewer was greeted by the Elders at the opposite end of the space. The conversations that ensued were not recorded. I was absent from the studio for the duration of the event.
